Education

Education is the foundational aspect of treatment. Sarah is passionate about teaching you about your body, how it is designed to work and what is contributing to the dysfunction that brings you into her office.

Exercise

Change is necessary and it happens through movement! Exercise follows education – once you understand what is happening in your body, exercise is designed to create change. No-one needs to live in pain forever and with the correct exercise prescription- painful physical experiences can be radically transformed.

Manual Therapy

There are times when manual therapy is indicated to change or impact muscle tension patterns. This service is typically provided through trigger point muscle release, soft tissue massage, tissue distraction release (cupping) or joint mobilizations.

Rehab Orthotics

When rehabbing your feet or lower limb, rehabilitative orthotics can be a great adjunct to treatment alongside an appropriate exercise program.  Rehabilitative orthotics are flexible compared to the standard rigid orthotic and are designed to retrain your feet and rebalance the lower limb muscle mass. By promoting natural food mobility, strength and power, they can reduce stress on the intrinsic tendons, plantar fascia, AND help to engage your body’s power muscles (think core and glutes!) to help support and stabilize during your activity.

By optimizing the foot’s joints motions through gait, rehabilitative orthotics greatly aids proper alignment of the foot, ankle, knee and hip. Also, by reducing stresses to your joints, they allow you to stay active and healthy for longer.

Tension, Stress and Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE)

Tension, Stress and Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE®) is a series of exercises that induce a natural reflex  “tremor” mechanism of shaking or vibrating within your body. This natural mechanism releases muscle tension related to injury, stress or trauma and acts to calm the nervous system. These exercises and subsequent shaking activated through TRE allow the body to release tension over time in a safe and controlled manner, to return to a natural state of balance.

TRE was developed by Dr. David Berceli, an international expert in trauma intervention and conflict resolution.  His education as a Massage Therapist, Psychoneurologist, and Doctor of Social Work informed his observations of how individuals hold and release tension in their body tissues.  He saw that these natural shaking mechanics are the body’s built-in system for releasing muscle tension, thereby calming the body and mind.  This is supported by recent research that demonstrates the physical and psychological nature of muscle tension.

When muscles become overly tight or stressed, they will begin to tremor (shake) – when the body doesn’t organically shake, chronic muscle tension patterns develop. TRE initiates the release of these muscle tension patterns that develop from injury, accidents or periods of physical, mental, emotional or spiritual stress arising from lifestyle choices, stressful workplaces, difficult life events, repetitive movement patterns, or poor ergonomics.

While TRE is not a substitute for trauma recovery procedures of a medical or psychiatric/psychological nature, it can supplement other healing practices and can be a highly effective complement to the exercises given by your physiotherapist or body worker.

Individuals who have physical or psychological conditions that require strict regulation, individuals with fragile psychological defenses, a complex history of trauma or restricting physical or medical limitations should be informed by and work with Certified TRE Provider in performing these exercises.

More information on TRE, including research, training, and development, can be found at TRE Canada or David Berceli’s website.
